A champion kickboxer from Co Down has been charged with causing the death of his two-month-old baby son.

Stuart Jess, 29, from Saintfield, was also accused of child cruelty against his son Callum Thai Jess in August 2008.

Mr Jess, who was the British welterweight kickboxing champion and fights under the name of the 'Saintfield Mauler', is accused of wilfully neglecting baby Callum in a manner likely to cause him injury.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

No details of the baby’s death were given during the court hearing but lawyers for the prosecution and defence said they were seeking medical reports from various experts, including a consultant paediatric pathologist.

Mr Jess was released on bail with the judge saying the trial could be heard in June.
