Up to 200 homes are being evacuated in north Belfast, as a security alert in the Oldpark area of the city continues.

Nothing suspicious has been found, but police say enquiries are continuing.

Police in north Belfast say a major security operation is under way, following a claim that a suspect device had been abandoned in the Oldpark area of the city.

Up to 200 families have been forced to evacuate their homes, as the security alert is expected to continue overnight.

Residents are staying with friends or family, while facilities have also been provided at the nearby Ardoyne Community Centre.

Superintendent Amanda Cooke said that while nothing suspicious had been found so far, officers were being very cautious.

Tonight's security alert comes two days after a bomb, containing 50kg of home-made explosives, was found near Derry courthouse.

A small hand-held explosive device was discovered in west Belfast yesterday.
