US President Barack Obama has been officially invited to Cork to launch a lecture series at UCC in honour of one of his heroes - anti-slavery champion Frederick Douglass.

A formal invitation from the UCC was sent to the White House yesterday.

UCC President Michael Murphy says they have invited the US President to launch a new human rights lecture series in honour of Douglass and unveil a statue to his hero.

Frederick Douglas was one of the leaders of the Abolitionist movement in America, and spent time in Cork during the Famine where he made three very important public appearances which attracted thousands of people.
