The Defence Forces say the suspicious package found at the gates of a school in Dublin this morning was an elaborate hoax.

Hundreds of children were moved from their classrooms at the North Brunswick Street school as an army bomb disposal team inspected the suspicious package with protruding wires.

Bomb disposal robots entered the school grounds at 10.20am to inspect the package, which was discovered shortly after classes commenced at around 9am.

Children were moved to the rear of the school and parents alerted by the school's text messaging system.

Part of the street was blocked off and traffic was diverted.
