Gardaí in Limerick say the death of an elderly man, whose body was found at his home in the St Mary's Park estate, is now being treated as a murder investigation.

The body of 71-year-old Jimmy Boyce was found at his home in St Munchin’s Street at around 7pm last night.

Gardaí were alerted after neighbours became concerned that he did not answer his door to his meals on wheels personnel, who visited him daily from the local community centre.

The house was sealed off and a technical examination was carried out.

Following a post mortem examination, which was completed by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy, gardaí are now satisfied the elderly man suffered a violent death.

An incident room has been established at Mayorstone Garda Station, and gardaí are widening their inquiries beyond the neighbourhood, where they had conducted house-to-house inquiries earlier today.

Robbery is one of the motives being pursued, but gardaí say they are following a number of lines of inquiry about what led to Mr Boyce's murder.
