Approximately 1,700 people gathered in West Cork today to protest at what campaigners say will be the closure of approximately 16 beds at Mount Carmel Community Hospital in Clonakilty.

The march - organised by the local hospital action committee - moved from the hospital through the town centre.

Campaigners are calling for an urgent meeting with the HSE to discuss the planned bed closures.

In a statement, the HSE said there would be no job losses as a result of the proposed closures and that the hospital would continue to provide residential and respite care for older people in the region.
