Prayers were offered at religious services in Cork for the victims of Thursday's plane crash and their families.

City and airport emergency personnel were given a standing ovation as they left a service at Ballyphehane, the parish which Cork Airport is situated.

President Mary McAleese's Aide-de-Camp Captain Louise Conlon together with Taoiseach Brian Cowen's Aide-de-Camp Commandant Michael Treacy joined staff members from Cork Airport and members of the emergency services at the Church of the Assumption in Ballyphehane for midday mass.

The Spanish Ambassador was represented by Cathy Goode who spent much of the last few days with the family of the Spanish pilot Jordi Sola Lopez who died in the crash.

In an emotional address, Parish Priest Fr Mick Murphy asked her to convey the community's heartfelt condolences to Mr Lopez’s family in Spain.

In his homily, the Bishop of Cork and Ross Dr John Buckley said there are no answers as to why six men had to loose their lives. The Lord's ways, he said are not our ways, suffering and death are mysterious.

Earlier the names of the six who died in last Thursday's plane crash were read out by Fr Murphy who called for prayers for the deceased and for the injured, that they make a full recovery.

The Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, Paul Colton, led the Sunday Liturgy in the Church of Ireland chapel in Cork University Hospital this morning.

Twelve candles, one for each of the passengers and crew on board, were lit by Church of Ireland CUH Chaplin Daniel Nuzum during the service.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Colton, said thoughts and prayers were with those who died, their loved ones who are grieving and those who survived and their families.

He said prayers were also with the workers at Manx2 airlines and all the communities affected by this tragedy not only here but also in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Great Britain, Spain and all parts of the world with which those caught up with this tragedy had to do.

An ecumenical service is also being arranged but no date has yet been set.
