The Garda Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the death of a man who died while in garda custody.

The 36-year-old father of three died early this morning at Tuam Garda Station in Co Galway.

He has been named as John T. Ward of Gilmartin Road in Tuam.

Mr Ward had been arrested in Shop Street in the town centre shortly after midnight on suspicion of being being involved in public order offences.

He was taken to the station and placed in a cell, where he was later found unconscious.

Attempts were made to revive him but he was pronounced dead at 4.30am.

Officials from the Garda Ombudman's office arrived in Tuam to begin their investigation early this morning.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy conducted a post mortem at Galway University Hospital after carrying out a preliminary examination in the Garda station.

The Garda Ombudsman said it would not be be releasing the results of the post mortem until tomorrow or early next week.

An area in the centre of Tuam where Mr Ward was arrested has been sealed off for forensic examination.
