Gardaí are treating as murder the death of a man whose body was found following a fire at his flat in Co Cork early this morning.

The dead man has been named as 31-year-old Michael O'Shea from North Main Street, Youghal.

Mr O'Shea's body was discovered after the fire service extinguished a fire at his flat.

A neighbour who saw smoke coming from the flat raised the alarm at 2.30am.

Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him in a laneway adjacent to the building, but he was declared dead a short time later.

His body was removed to Cork University Hospital at lunchtime, where a post mortem was conducted this afternoon.

A forensic examination of the scene was being carried out today.

It is understood that a number of wounds were found on Mr O'Shea's body and that the results of the post mortem examination confirmed he had died violently.
