Two pedestrians have died in a road crash in Limerick in which the car was being driven by an off-duty garda.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on the N20 close to the Raheen roundabout on the outskirts of Limerick city.
A male and female garda who had just come off duty at Limerick's Henry Street Garda Station were travelling home in their own private car when two male pedestrians, believed to have been on the road, were struck by the car.
The men, who have been identified as Gavin O'Callaghan, 20, , Knocknaheny, Co Cork and Mark Farrell, 23, formerly of Mayfield, Cork and recently residing elsewhere in the city were pronounced dead at the scene.
The area was preserved as an accident scene and a technical examination was due to be carried out.
The Garda Ombudsman's office was informed, as gardaí were involved in the incident, and will be carrying out its own investigation.
Elsewhere, gardaí have confirmed that a 17-year-old died in a road crash in Co Offaly.
The single-vehicle crash happened at Derryadd, Killeigh, shortly before 10pm last night close to the Laois border.
A passenger in the car was taken to Tullamore General Hospital with minor injuries.
