A mother and her 10-year-old son have died and three other people have been injured in a car crash in Co Louth.

The crash occurred at around 2.30pm at Cangy, Dunleer. It is understood that the car struck a wall.

A 35-year-old woman, who was a front seat passenger, and her son were killed.

The woman's husband, who was driving the car, along with the couple's four-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old girl who was also in the car were injured.

All three were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda.

The four-year-old girl has since been transferred to Children's University Hospital, Temple Street in Dublin, where she is described as being in a serious condition.

The 11-year-old is said to be in a critical condition and has been transferred to Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.

The road, which is on the old M1 south of Castlebellingham, was closed and diversions were in place.
