Road Safety officers, members of the Emergency Services and the gardaí joined local communities at services across the country today to mark World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims.

Among the services held was a special ceremony in Buncrana, Co Donegal, not far from where eight men lost their lives last July.

At the time the Clonmany crash was described as the worst the country had seen since records began.

Last year, 240 people died on Irish roads, which was a record low. So far this year, 197 people have lost their lives in road crashes.

Over 22,800 people have lost their lives on Irish roads since records began.
