A small plane made an emergency landing on a busy stretch of Interstate 85 in Atlanta yesterday evening just as the city's busy rush hour began.

The plane was forced to land at around 5pm on a southbound stretch of the interstate close to Peachtree-Dekalb Airport, where it was headed.

Footage from the scene shows the plane blocking lanes on the interstate as emergency services attended the incident.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said there were no injuries reported after the Piper Saratoga landed on the highway.

DeKalb County police said that the landing went relatively smoothly.

Ms Bergen said authorities are not yet certain how many passengers were on the plane.

She said investigators are trying to determine what forced the plane to land on the road.
