An agriculture co-operative store in Abbeyknockmoy, Co Galway, has been destroyed by fire.

The blaze broke out at the Arrabawn store at Newtown at about 5am this morning.

Four units of the Galway fire service fought the blaze for four hours but were unable to bring it under control.

Adjoining houses were evacuated as the fire took hold but the fire brigade succeeded in confining the blaze to the store.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
