Dublin City councillors will be updated on the Council's position on its contract for the Poolbeg incinerator at a meeting of the council tomorrow.

The original contract for the controversial incinerator expires today.

In a statement, Dublin City Council said it remained in a contractual position with the company Covanta for the provision of a 'Waste to Energy' facility.

The contract between Dublin City Council and Covanta was signed on 4 September 2007.

It is estimated that €120m has been spent to date on the project.

RTÉ's Prime Time revealed last week that the contract would run out today and, if all conditions had not been fulfilled, the Council could extend or renegotiate the deal or walk away.

The Council believes that the project is essential to deal with Dublin's waste for many years to come and would provide good value for money for the taxpayer.
