A woman and her teenage daughter have been killed in a road accident in Co Mayo.
The 39-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter, both Polish nationals, were passengers in a car that went out of control and crashed near Ballina.
Three others who were injured in the accident have been taken to hospital in Castlebar.
The accident occurred on a narrow stretch of the coast road between Ballina in Co Mayo and Enniscrone in Co Sligo shortly before midday.
The car the five were travelling in went out of control at a bend on the road at Knockbrendan. It then plunged through a fence and overturned in a field.
The mother and daughter died at the scene. The driver and two other passengers were rushed to Mayo General Hospital, but their injuries are said not to be life threatening.
It is understood the five were visiting Polish friends living in Enniscrone.
Gardaí have sealed off the crash site and are trying to establish the cause of the accident.
Gardaí in Ballina are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the accident to contact them.
Gardai have appealed witnesses or anyone who may have on the road between 11.30am and 11.50am to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096 20560.
Pedestrian killed in Waterford
Meanwhile, in Co Waterford a 64-year-old woman was fatally injured at lunchtime when she was struck by a car while walking on the N25 Waterford - Dungarvan Road.
The accident occurred at The Pike, near Dungarvan.
The woman is a native of Tallow, Co Waterford.
