A 39-year-old man has appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with assaulting his wife at their home in Mulhuddart in Dublin last Monday.

Andrez Benko was charged with assaulting his wife, Joanna, and causing her harm at Ladyswell Road.

Joanna, 31, was beaten with a hammer while she slept in bed. The couple's three-year-old son was downstairs at the time.

Mr Benko was remanded in custody with consent to bail.

Detective Patrick Traynor gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that Mr Benko made no reply when the charge was put to him.

Detective Traynor had no objection to bail and Judge Patrick Madden remanded him in custody with consent to bail.

The judge set bail conditions, including a cash lodgement of €2,000, that Mr Benko sign on daily, that he surrender his passport and not apply for another and that he notify the gardaí within 24 hours of any change of address.

Mr Benko did not speak during the brief hearing.

Judge Madden also directed that while Mr Benko was to live at the couple’s home on Ladyswell Road, he was to have no contact with his wife.

Ms Benko remains critically ill in Beaumont Hospital.
