A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a young man in Co Wicklow on Friday night.

Thomas O'Connor, originally from Greystones, but now of no fixed abode appeared before Bray District Court this morning.

He was charged with recklessly or intentionally assaulting causing serious harm to John O'Brien at Farranakelly Road on 4 June.

Mr O'Connor remained silent during the brief hearing other than to confirm that he required legal aid.

Gardaí discovered John O'Brien's body on a footpath in Greystones shortly after midnight on Friday night, when they were called to investigate reports of an altercation in the area.

A post mortem examination revealed he died as a result of a violent assault.

Mr O'Connor was remanded in custody to appear again in Bray District Court on 14 June.

Detective Sergent Eamon O'Neill from Bray Garda Station said gardaí were objecting to the granting of bail because of the seriousness of the charge involved, and the prospect that further and more serious charges would follow.

He said gardaí considered Thomas O'Connor to be a flight risk as he was currently of no fixed abode.

However, Thomas O'Connor did not make a formal application for bail and so was remanded in custody to appear in court again next Monday.
