Two people have been arrested in connection with a shooting in Tullamore in which a 24-year-old woman was injured.

The woman received pellet wounds and narrowly escaped serious injury when two shots were fired through the front window of her living room last night.

A man in his 20s was arrested shortly after 2am in the Tullamore area, while a woman, also in her 20s, was arrested shortly before 8am.

It is the third gun attack in the town in the last nine days and has prompted gardaí to set up a number of armed checkpoints in the area.

Since 19 April, gardaí in Tullamore have dealt with shooting incidents in housing estates at Arden View, Cluain Darach and Chancery Lane.

In previous incidents damage was caused to windows and doors.
