A man in his 40s has been arrested in Cork city in connection with the death of 57-year-old Catherine Smart in Midleton, Co Cork.
Detectives are treating her death as murder.
Gardaí are also conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area and are appealing to people who may have seen Ms Smart between 3am and 10am yesterday morning to contact them.
The body of Ms Smart was found after gardaí were called to her home in Bailick Court yesterday morning.
State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy conducted the post-mortem examination on the body of Ms Smart at Cork University Hospital last night.
For operational reasons the results of the examination have not been released.
However, it is understood Ms Smart died of head injuries and detectives are satisfied at this stage that she more than likely sustained those injuries as a result of an assault rather than a fall.
