A man has been injured in a shooting in Limerick.

It happened at about 10pm last night in the Ballynanty area of the city.

The victim was a passenger in car located on Shanbooley Road, which is just behind Thomond Park Stadium.

It is understood two shots were fired at the car, injuring the victim in the shoulder.

The victim's girlfriend was driving the car and sped off once the incident happened.

They located a nearby ambulance that was on standby because of the Heineken Cup match between Munster and Northampton.

The man was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
