Severe ice and rain made driving conditions hazardous, and motorists were advised to be particularly cautious on secondary and local roads.

Gardaí in Galway advised people not to travel at all on Christmas Day, and warned that heavy rain across the county had frozen and made driving conditions treacherous.

Emergency services also warned motorists to avoid local roads around Navan in Co Meath.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Fire Brigade on Christmas Day said all routes into and out of the town were ‘virtually impassable’ due to icy conditions.

AA Roadwatch warned that many roads in county Tipperary were also impassable. The AA reported a number of crashes and also advised against unneccessary travel.

Met Éireann forecast that temperatures may drop to -3C overnight, with rain, sleet and snow expected in parts of the north and east of the country.
