Police in Northern Ireland came under attack while helping two men who were shot in the legs in Derry yesterday evening.

The shooting occurred in an alleyway in the Creggan area of the city.

Police who came to the aid of the men were attacked with missiles, fireworks and a petrol bomb.

The shooting victims were taken to hospital and both are said to in stable conditions.

SDLP Assembly member Pat Ramsey condemned the incident, saying there was no place in civilised society for any form of punishment attacks.
