A jury has been sworn in for the trial of a 21-year-old Co Kerry man charged with causing the deaths of a garda and a fire officer in a traffic accident outside Askeaton in Limerick two years ago.

At the Circuit Court in Limerick, Niall Shannon of Lenamore in Ballylongford, pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of Garda Brian Kelliher and fire officer Michael Liston.

The accident happened at Barrigone on the main road between Askeaton and Foynes in Co Limerick in the early hours of 25 February 2007.

Garda Kelliher was based at Croom in Co Limerick and Michael Liston was a fire officer based at Foynes.

The court was told there would be almost 40 witnesses involved in the case, among them fire officers, gardaí and doctors, and that the proceedings are likely to take two weeks.

The trial got under way at 2pm this afternoon in Limerick.
