A murder inquiry has been launched following the discovery of a woman's body in the Phoenix Park yesterday.

A post-mortem examination has revealed that the woman died as a result of internal trauma caused by multiple stab wounds to her upper body.

She was 4’10”, of medium build, with brown shoulder-length hair and aged in her 40s.

She was wearing a green or grey zip-up fleece and a striped red and blue top.

She was wearing three-quarter length pink leggings and she had gold nail varnish on her toes.

The woman was wearing a gold St Anthony chain, a silver cross necklace and gold Creole-type hooped-earrings.

A white scarf and black zip-up jacket were found nearby. A black, lady's bike was found near the scene.

She has not yet been identified.

Gardaí say no weapon has yet been found and they are considering both the possibility that the woman was killed at that location or that she was killed elsewhere and her body was left in the Phoenix Park.

They are also appealing to the two passers-by, who initially raised the alarm, to contact them.

Gardaí are asking people who may have been in the area over the past three days and saw anything unusual to contact Finglas Garda Station on 01-6667400.
