Classmates of one of the Irish victims of last month's Air France plane crash gathered in Thurles this evening for a special mass to remember their friend.

Dr Aisling Butler died with two of her colleagues when a French plane crashed on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris at the end of May.

The doctors had been returning from holidays in South America.

The Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles said over 100 of Dr Butler's former classmates had made contact with staff in recent weeks to express their condolences.

A school spokesperson said the 26-year-old from Roscrea was fondly remembered as a happy, outgoing girl.

Students who completed their studies along with Dr Butler in 2001 were invited to attend the mass at the school's Boarders' Chapel this evening.

The class of 2000 was also informed about the ceremony as many of them would have been fellow pupils of Dr Butler until she undertook the transition year programme after her Junior Certificate exams.
