A 22-year-old man has been arrested after the discovery of a man's body at a house in Templemore, Co Tipperary.

The body of 56-year-old James McInerney was found in a house at Lacey Avenue in the town at around 10.40pm last night.

He died following an assault.

He was a married father of 11 children and was well known in the area as a local horse trader.

The man who was arrested is being held at Templemore Garda Station.

The scene has been sealed off and investigations are ongoing.

Mr McInerney's body has been removed from the scene for a post mortem examination.

That examination was due to be carried out at the Midwestern Regional Hospital in Limerick by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy tonight.
