A 27-year-old man has been charged with a number of firearms offences after an incident at Bessbrook in Co Armagh on Friday evening.

The charges follow an assault on two men, aged in their late teens, at Cloughreagh Park.

The man is expected to appear at Newry Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

The PSNI says an 18-year-old man has also been arrested.

The men who were attacked were taken to hospital for treatment.

One had a head injury that required 11 staples.

A bottle and a dog chain were used in the assault, according to police.

The PSNI has appealed for information.

Police are also investigating a separate attack early yesterday morning at Omagh in Co Tyrone.

A 21-year-old man was assaulted at Scarffes Entry in the town centre some time after 4am.

He was taken to hospital in Derry with a serious head injury and was then transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where his condition is described as critical.

The PSNI says a 16 year-old youth has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and is expected to appear in court at Omagh on Wednesday 17 June.

As is normal procedure, the charge is subject to review by the Public Prosecution Service.

Elsewhere, a 17-year-old youth has been taken to hospital after being shot in both legs in the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast this morning.

The incident, involving an unknown number of attackers, is believed to have taken place at a house at Westrock Park some time before 9.15am.

The victim's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
