A man charged with attempted murder in connection with a sectarian attack in Coleraine last month claims that he has an alibi.

Philip Kane, 34, was charged with the attempted murder of 46-year-old Damian Fleming.

Mr Kane stated in the Coleraine Magistrates' Court today that he had an alibi.

Detective Sergeant Peter McKenna said: 'We have spoken to all alibi witnesses to date. Some do confirm that alibi.'

However, he added that a large number did not corroborate the alibi.

Mr Fleming was seriously injured when he was attacked by a loyalist mob in the town on 24 May.

There was no bail application and Mr Kane was ordered to reappear from prison via video link on 8 June.

Father-of-four Kevin McDaid, 49, was killed in the same attack in the Somerset Drive area.

Six men have been charged with the murder of Mr McDaid.
