A Dublin man has been jailed for five years after being found with two hand grenades and a gun.

Paul Dunphy, 45, of Allenton Drive in Tallaght was arrested in Crumlin in March after gardaí received a confidential tip-off.

Dunphy pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing the gun and grenades, but claimed he was told to collect the items and was not sure what they were.

Gardaí told the court that the items were found stuffed down the front of his trousers.

Judge Frank O'Donnell said that in a gun and ammunition-ridden society he considered the offence very serious.
