A 21-year-old student has died after a car he was pushing rolled over him and crushed him in Cork.

The accident happened at Westbourne Park off Magazine Road in the city at around 5pm this evening.

The young man was alone at the time and it is thought the car ran ahead of him on a slope and he was crushed as he attempted to stop it.

He died later at Cork University Hospital.

It is understood the young man was a final year student at University College Cork and was from Limerick.

Meanwhile, two people are in a serious condition in hospital after a crash near Aughrim in Co Galway.

The crash, involving a bus and a car, happened at 6.50pm this evening on the main Galway to Dublin Road.

Five people in total were injured in the the collision, which happened on the Ballinasloe side of the village.

Gardaí say the Aughrim/ Ballinasloe road will be closed for several hours and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

The injured are being treated at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

The condition of three others, who were injured in the crash, is being assessed.

Elsewhere, a 26-year-old man was killed in a road accident in Co Tyrone.

The crash occurred on the Dungannon Road near Cookstown this morning.

Two other passengers in the car, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital but their injuries are said to be not life-threatening.

Traffic was diverted while police investigated the incident.
