A 13-year-old schoolgirl has died after being struck by a car outside Limerick city.

The girl was crossing the main Ballyneety-Limerick road near the Cat's Cradle pub to go to the school bus stop when the accident occurred at around 8am this morning.

The girl was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital but died a short time later.

She was a first year student at Laurel Hill Secondary School in Limerick.

Gardaí at Roxboro are investigating and the road was closed while they examined the scene.
