The Government has announced the appointment of a Special Envoy for Hunger.

Kevin Farrell, who worked for the World Food Programme for almost 20 years, has been appointed to the position.

He will promote Irish efforts on the eradication of hunger internationally.

Minister of State for Overseas Development Peter Power made the announcement this morning at Government Buildings.

The appointment is in response to a taskforce report on hunger which was given to Government last September.

Ireland is committed to helping halve world hunger levels by 2015.

This morning Minister Power said Ireland is to make the eradication of hunger the cornerstone of its aid programme.
