Two men have died in a car accident in Co Limerick.

The two men died after the car they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a wall shortly before 2am this morning.

The collision happened between the town of Hospital and Limerick City. No other vehicles were involved.

Gardaí in Bruff, Co Limerick say the men were aged 21 and 22 and from the area.

The road was closed overnight while gardaí carried out a technical examination of the scene. It has since been re-opened.

The bodies have been removed to Midwestern Regional Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

Tribute has been paid to the victims by a local councillor.

PD Cllr Eddie Creighton from Hospital, who knew the young men, said that 'any parent would be proud to have them as sons'.

He said that their deaths had cast a gloom of despair over the community.
