Motorists were being urged to take extra care on the roads this afternoon due to icy conditions and freezing temperatures.

AA Roadwatch said although some roads had thawed out, driving conditions were still bad in parts of Cork, Kerry and Galway.

It was advising drivers to avoid unnecessary journeys and when driving to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Separately, Met Éireann has warned of very cold weather over the next few days, with severe frost and fog.

Many places will be dry but some wintry showers at times mainly in coastal areas.
