Gardaí are investigating separate shooting incidents in Limerick and Cork last night.

A man is in hospital after being shot in the Garryowen area of Limerick city at around 11pm.

A car pulled up on South Claughan Road and one of the occupants fired a number of shots at the victim, who was wounded in the leg.

He is believed to be his early 30s and is being treated at Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Elsewhere, a shot was fired at an unmarked garda patrol car in Cork city at around midnight.

The incident happened when detectives were on patrol at a halting site on Carrigrohane Road.

A shot was also fired by one of the occupants of a car, which appears to have followed the detectives into the halting site.

No one was injured.

The car was later found abandoned on the northside of the city and will be technically examined later today.

The scene at the halting site has also been preserved for examination.
