A man in his early 40s died in a road crash near Crossgar in Co Down this morning.

Police say the victim was the driver of a car which collided with a van on Saintfield Road at about 7am. The two occupants of the van were not injured.

Separately, gardaí in Clifden investigating yesterday's crash in which two men died are appealing to the driver of a light blue SUV who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed the incident to come forward.

French tourists 49-year-old Laurent Roy and 67-year-old Claude Chanterault died when their car plunged down an embankment in north Connemara.

Elsewhere, heavy rain made driving conditions treacherous across parts of Northern Ireland this morning.

Five people were rescued from their cars when they were trapped in floodwater on a road near Moira, Co Down.

The PSNI warned of flooding in many areas as downpours continued, and said Rathfrisland Road at Banbridge had been closed by floodwater after a nearby river burst its banks.
