An inquest into the deaths of a mother and her two young children has heard details of the road crash that caused the tragedy last year.

Nurse Bernie Cassidy, 39, was driving her Toyota Yaris from Naas on the main N8 Dublin to Cork road to visit relatives in north Cork in May 2007 when the crash happened not far from Urlingford.

Her two daughters, four-year-old Caroline and Rosanna, who was only a few months old, were with her in the car.

The former international athlete Geraldine Hendricken, 37, was travelling home in the opposite direction.

The inquest in Clonmel today heard that driving conditions were good at the time and speed was not involved in either case.

Evidence was also given that Ms Cassidy was suffering no ill health before the accident and her car was in good working condition.

The jury was told by witnesses that Ms Cassidy's car veered gradually to the opposite side of the road, where it struck the car being driven by Ms Hendricken.

The mother-of-two died instantly at the scene, and her young daughters died shortly afterwards.

Ms Hendricken, who is a medical representative from Carlow, escaped serious injury but sustained broken bones in her foot.
