A French registered fishing boat has sunk off the Co Clare coast.

The crew of 10 was rescued and brought to Castletownbere by another French boat.

The 40m Koaxi sent out a distress call shortly after 10am this morning reporting a fire in its engine room. The blaze could not be brought under control and the boat sank.

The second boat, the Concerto, which had been in the area, located about 32 miles northwest of Loop Head, picked up the Koaxi's Spanish crew.

The Shannon-based coast guard rescue helicopter was involved in the rescue operation, which was co-ordinated by Valentia coast guard.
