The death has taken place of the renowned Clare fiddle player and founder member of the Tulla Céilí band Paddy Canny. He was aged 89.

Born in 1919, Mr Canny grew up near Tulla in Co Clare and won the All Ireland fiddle title in 1953.

He also held the distinction of playing on the first album of Irish traditional music, recorded in 1959 which also featured PJ Hayes and Peader O'Loughlin.

Mr Canny played all over the world including at Carnegie Hall in New York and released his first solo album when he was in his seventies.

His wife Philomena died some years ago and he is survived by two daughters.
