A 34-year-old man has been before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court charged with membership of the INLA.

The court heard Declan Duffy of Hannover Street West, Dublin 8, told gardaí he was not a member of any illegal organisation.

Declan Duffy spoke just once during the brief hearing, to confirm his identity.

Wearing dark glasses, a green jacket and black tracksuit bottoms, he was brought before the court shortly after 8.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Marilyn Brosnan of the Special Detective Unit gave evidence of arresting him in Blackrock, Co Dublin.

After he was cautioned, she told the court, Mr Duffy replied 'I am not a member of any illegal organisation.'

He was formally charged before the court with being a member of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish National Liberation Army, or the INLA, on 22 June.

Mr Duffy was remanded in custody and will be brought before the court again on Thursday afternoon.
