The jury in the trial of a Mountjoy prisoner accused of murdering another inmate has failed to reach a verdict.
28-year-old Declan O'Reilly of Parnell Road, Crumlin, in Dublin had pleaded not guilty to murdering Derek Glennon in Mountjoy Prison on 25 June last year.
The jury had deliberated for more than six hours when the forewoman told Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins that the jury was unable to reach the required majority decision of at least 10-2.
Mr Justice O'Higgins asked the forewoman if more time or other assistance might help, to which she replied 'No'.
The judge then thanked the jury for their care and consideration and exempted them from jury service for the next seven years.
He said the case would now be sent back to another jury for a second hearing.
The jury had spent last night in a hotel after failing to reach a verdict yesterday.
