Three people have died and three others seriously injured in separate road accidents in Cos Donegal, Tipperary and Meath this evening.

A mother aged 16 and her three-month-old daughter died in a two-vehicle collision near Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

The woman's car was involved in a collision with a jeep which was towing a trailer full of sheep at about 8.45pm tonight.

Two men who were the drivers of the car and jeep were seriously injured. They have been taken to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The accident happened in the townland of Tullygay about a mile and a half outside Letterkenny on the Glenties road.

Gardaí are investigating the cause of the accident and the road will be closed off overnight.

A man has been killed in a single-vehicle road accident on the N52 in Co Tipperary.

The accident happened about 3km from Borrisokane on the Portumna side at about 8.45pm. The driver was the only occupant of the car involved in the crash.

Gardaí at Nenagh are investigating. Motorists are advised to avoid using this route if possible.

Separately, gardaí at Ashbourne, Co Meath, are investigating a serious road accident that occurred on the N2 at the Rath roundabout shortly before 6.15pm this evening.

A truck and a car collided in the accident which occurred shortly before 6.15pm this evening.

The car driver suffered injuries described as serious. He has been taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, where his condition is described as stable.

Traffic from the N2 bypass is being diverted. Gardaí say diversions may remain in place until the morning.
