A 31-year-old Dublin law student has been charged with rape, endangerment, assault, theft and fraud.

The charges arise from a garda investigation into the case of a woman who was ill and who was being treated by her then boyfriend who claimed to be a doctor.

The woman complained to gardaí after she discovered he did not work in a number of hospitals where he claimed to work.

She said she had gone to a Dublin clinic in 2006 and was advised to immediately see a doctor.

However she told detectives that her boyfriend told her not to bother, that he would treat her and prescribe antibiotics on a doctor's prescription pad.

The woman, who has since been diagnosed with cancer, also told the gardaí he carried out invasive procedures.

The woman said she also noticed money missing from her accounts and discovered presents that he gave her had been bought with her laser card.

The garda investigation took over 18 months.

Detectives from Mountjoy in Dublin arrested a man in south Dublin at 8am this morning.

He was subsequently charged with 12 offences, including two counts of rape, two counts of assault, endangerment, theft and fraud.
