Man charged in bookmaker robbery case

A 27-year-old man has appeared in court in connection with the robbery of a bookmaker in Thurles last month.

Thomas McCarthy of Hawthorn Drive in Thurles was charged with robbing Pat Ryan of €12,000 at his home in Clohane, Holycross, on the evening of 25 January.

He was further charged with possessing cocaine for the purpose of sale or supply at his home on 7 February 2007. The value of the cocaine is understood to be at least €37,000.

The court heard from investigating gardaí that more serious charges are likely in the case.

Mr McCarthy was remanded in custody to appear at the District court on 19 February.
