A man has died in a two-vehicle collision on the N7 at Newlands Cross in Dublin.

The accident happened at around 3.30pm this afternoon.

His death brings to five the number of people who died on the country's roads today.

Two men died following a road traffic accident in Mitchelstown in Co Cork this afternoon.

The two, both in their 40s, were the drivers of a van and a landcruiser which collided head-on on the Mitchelstown relief road just after 2pm.

Earlier, two young men lost their lives in a crash involving three cars on the Kanturk to Newmarket road.

The collision happened at around 8am this morning, around 2km from Kanturk.

They have been named as 25-year-old Gerard O'Keeffe, a single man from Duarrigle, Newmarket, and 39-year-old James McAuliffe, a married father-of-four from Barry's Place in Newmarket.

Both men killed were travelling in the same car.

A woman who was also in the car was taken to Cork University Hospital, but she is not believed to have been seriously injured.

The driver of one of the other cars had to be cut from the wreckage and was also taken to Cork University Hospital.

The driver of the third car was treated at the scene for shock.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Separately, gardaí have named the man who died in yesterday's fatal accident at Newtowncunningham, Co Donegal. He was 25-year-old Przemyslaw Szczepanski of Lough View, Buncrana, Co Donegal.
