A suicide car bomb at a naval barracks in Dellys in northeast Algeria has killed at least 28 people and wounded 60.

The bomber drove a van packed with explosives through a back  gate of the coastguard barracks at Dellys, some 100km east of Algiers and blew it up.

The attack came only two days after a suicide bomber killed 22 people and wounded more than 100 in a failed assassination bid against President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in Batna, in the east of the country.

Access to the city of Dellys was immediately blocked off and a security cordon thrown around the port where the attack took place.
