Five people have been killed in road accidents in Dublin, Kilkenny, and Galway.

In Dublin, a motorcyclist has died following an accident on Merrion Road, opposite Wanderers Rugby Club.

The 35-year-old man died in St Vincent's Hospital following the crash, which occured at around 7.45am. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Another man died following an accident on Whitefriar Street.

He was a pedestrian who was hit by a truck at around 10am this morning. His identity will not be released until his family have been informed.

Meanwhile, two women died as a result of a crash near Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, this morning.

They have been named as Vanessa McGarry, 31, from Butler's Grove in Gowran and Mary Lonergan, 49, from Kellymount in Paulstown.

The incident occurred 3km south of Thomastown at around 9.30am.

Three others, a man, woman and a girl, were seriously injured in the collision, which involved an articulated truck and a number of other vehicles.

The N9 was closed and diversions were in place as a result of the accident.

And an 18-year-old man died after his car crashed into a tree in Clonbrock, Co Galway, at around 6am this morning.

The road was closed as an accident investigation team conducted an examination.

The man is believed to be from the east Galway area.

The Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority, Noel Brett, has said today's deaths illustrated how dangerous Irish roads are.

He asked motorists to heed statistics that show that July is the most dangerous month of the year for accidents and urged road users to take responsibilty for their actions.
