Two separate investigations are under way into the death of a 42-year-old man who was found unconscious in a garda cell in Tralee, Co Kerry.

The man, who is Polish, was taken to Kerry General Hospital where he was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon.

He had been arrested shortly after 4am yesterday morning by gardaí investigating a report of a sexual assault in Tralee.

At around 2pm yesterday he was found unconscious in his cell at Tralee Garda Station. Gardaí on duty called for medical assistance and he was brought to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The scene was preserved for technical examination and the State Pathologist has been notified.

A post mortem examination was due to be carried out today.

The Garda Commissioner has appointed a senior garda from outside the Kerry division to investigate the man's death.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has also begun its own independent investigation.
