An independent republican candidate in the recent Assembly election in Northern Ireland has appeared in court in connection with the attempted murder of a part-time UDR soldier almost 26 years ago.

Gerry McGeough, aged 46, from Gortmerrion in Dungannon and Vincent McAnespie, aged 44, from Aghabo Close in Aughnacloy, appeared before the Magistrates' Court in Enniskillen.

McAnespie replied 'not guilty' to each of the three charges, while McGeough said 'no comment'.

Both were remanded in custody.
